A Blissful Home: Who wouldn't want one?

Photo of open shelving from Pottery BarnOpen shelving from Pottery Barn.At my annual decorating conference last week in Atlanta, we were once again treated to a fascinating presentation by Susan Yashinsky of Sphere Trending.  This organization searches the world for fashion and design trends and puts them together in a vibrant and useful way for designers to utilize.

The program,"The New Economic Reality:  Design's Bold New World," included five fascinating trends:  Modern Homestead, Modern by Nature,  Industrial Era, Blissful Home and Cross-town Chic.

The one that captivated me so much that I decided to blog about it first, is Blissful Home.  I just like the sound of it!

Couldn't we all use a dose of bliss?  I think so!  Especially since most of us are spending more time at home.

We know that fashion influences design.  Who can forget Michelle Obama in that beautiful lemongrass dress and coat on inauguration day?  And yes, as Sphere Trending indicates, the Obama influence on design has been amazing. Photo of Michelle Obama on inauguration dayPhoto courtesy of John Sanders. A certain serenity and optimism is reflected in the look with eco and earth colors, emerald greens and clean lines.  According to Susan, this look could be called "casual country cleaned up."

Rose-tinted white, sunny yellow, garden green, amethyst, aqua and coral, lemon-white-black, silver pewter, blush taupe...are all colors that are seen in this trend.  Distressed woods, gingham, dimensional patterns, lattice work, clean and fresh lines, free-standing furnishings and open shelving are the trademarks.   And don't be afraid to mix styles.

This studio wall shelf (see photo above) from the Pottery Barn catalogue is a great example:  a beautiful way to solve storage issues with attractive open shelving set against a bright sunny room.  It would work in almost any room of the house for various kinds of displays.   And at Spectacular Spaces, we love furnishings that have multiple uses.

Have a blissful home!
